VP of Finance (nonprofit)
Overview
The VP of Finance will serve as a key member of the leadership team, responsible for shaping and directing the organization's financial strategy and operations. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the VP of Finance will oversee all aspects of financial planning, budgeting, compliance, and reporting to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of the organization. This individual will work closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and leadership team to provide financial insight, guide decision-making, and support strategic initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
- Provide forward-looking financial leadership, advising the CEO and senior leadership on financial performance, opportunities, and risks.
- Develop long-range financial plans aligned with the organization's mission and growth goals.
- Partner with the leadership team to assess investment opportunities, major contracts, and capital projects.
Financial Operations & Controls
- Oversee day-to-day financial operations, ensuring accurate accounting, reporting, and compliance with all applicable standards and regulations.
- Establish and maintain robust internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard assets and strengthen operational efficiency.
- Ensure financial records are maintained in accordance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
- Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for internal and external stakeholders.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Direct the development of annual operating budgets, multi-year forecasts, and capital expenditure plans.
- Provide timely and accurate financial analyses to support organizational decision-making.
- Monitor cash flow and liquidity needs, ensuring the organization maintains financial stability.
Risk Management & Compliance
- Oversee treasury functions, including banking relationships, investments, and lines of credit.
- Ensure proper risk management practices, including insurance coverage and regulatory compliance.
- Maintain oversight of external audit processes and ensure timely completion of audit and tax filings.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
- Manage and mentor a small team of finance professionals, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with department leaders to align financial resources with organizational priorities.
- Act as staff liaison to the Finance and Audit Committees of the Board, preparing reports and presenting financial results.
Qualifications
- CPA with Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; MBA strongly preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, with at least 5 years in a senior management role.
- Strong track record of overseeing complex budgets, financial reporting, and compliance.
- Experience in nonprofit, housing, construction, or real estate sectors preferred but not required.
- Advanced knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills, with the ability to influence across all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, implement systems, and improve financial processes.
Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco/Highspring depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual's skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location and other geographic considerations, as well as other business and organizational needs.
